The TV liecense fee in Great Britain

I was just wondering how strongly enforce is it? Are the citizens normally pretty good about paying it and how can the tell if someone has a television and is not paying the fee?

reply

Most people seem to pay up with little more than a bit of grumbling (you can pay it in monthly instalments rather than in one big £150 chunk - we just think of it as another monthly bill).

And it's very easy for them to check if someone hasn't paid: they have a huge database of every address in the country, so those that haven't paid up can easily be identified. The downside of this is that occasionally, even people who don't have a TV will get a visit from the "enforcer" (who is just a bureaucrat with a clipboard, not as sinister as it sounds!). But once they've confirmed you don't own a TV, or have no capability of receiving live television broadcasts, they'll leave you alone.

And if you have someone in your household who's over 75, you get it for free!

Make tea, not war.

We have the same thing in Sweden. If you buy a new TV they get a notice and they will send a bill. They know if you're paying or not.
We don't have the over 75 yrs thing, though. Why should they watch for free?

reply

actually you can have TV and never need a license in the UK, You only ever need a TV License in the UK if you receive a live broadcast, Like if you watch live sports you need a TV license, But if I just use a TV with dvd player then I don't need a TV license , Its only when I want to watch something being broadcast live or shown its schedule time slot..

So anyone can have TV and never need a TV license..

But once they've confirmed you don't own a TV, or have no capability of receiving live television broadcasts, they'll leave you alone. And you can phone your mate to bring your TV back around.

How can I go forward when I don't know which way I'm facing?

reply

Or just bring it back down from the attic...

We got caught in college, my friends gf answered the door, let in a man with a clipboard automatically thinking he was there to read the electric meter... and low and behold there he was in the lounge watching the tv, he gave us 24hrs to buy a licence and no fine. Before cable and satellite they sent vans around the streets searching for aerials receiving signals.

Referring to any religion as a mental handicap sounds inappropriate, despite being true.

reply

that's true only if the TV you use with your dvd player is completely tuned out of every channel - if it can receive a signal then you'll likely get a fine.
