In defence of Blackadder

The year 2014, as every schoolboy knows, marks an important anniversary. It is twenty five years since the final series of perhaps the best British sitcom of all time, Blackadder: Blackadder Goes Forth.

It is a shame then, that some have used another anniversary (the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War) to attack the much loved series

Haven’t read this and do not wish to and also do not understand it - excellent last series that highlighted the contemptuous, pompous, barking mad attitude of the Officer Class to the OR, witnessed by the likes of Bruce Bairnsfather’s Old Bill and the like, showing the gallows humour that pervaded the trenches and letting men deal with the horrific situation as only they could.

Apart from which it was overall a fitting tribute to the many brave men and women who gave their lives or suffered horrible injuries and/or mental anguish.

The last scene of the final episode still now brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.

RIP all those brave warriors.

I agree! Brilliant series.
Although as you haven't read what it's about, you're not likely to understand it are you?

Valid point, but as I get older I become more stuck in my views, dismissing anything that might conflict with them.

Shouldn't have used "understand" I suppose, but I am very happy with Blackadder and have no interest with anything or anyone else's opinion.

Don't know how old you are of course, but the Victor Meldrew syndrome kicks in, in some form, and you get more cranky the older you get. :>)

Maybe it's because you have fewer years left and really couldn't give a monkey's what anyone else thinks.

Okay! But this is a discussion forum! If you want to avoid dissenting opinions, you might be in the wrong place!
I'm in my 30s and love Blackadder anyway.

The dissenting views come from politicians, and can therefore be ignored.

Michael Gove is an idiot with an unhealthy obsession with pushing the education system back to a 1950s view of the world and Britain's place in it. The man is a dangerously deluded fool.

And he looks like a giant baby, but that's another matter.

Make tea, not war.
