The Modern BritCom is more than just funny

I really enjoyed the last series of "Rev" just as I'm enjoying the current series of "Derek".

They have things in common I feel. They both star consummate and confident actors playing very much against type. They are both set in potentially cosy oldie environments- the Church of England and an Old People's Home. Neither in any way seeks to mock that environment.

Though each can be funny I feel that the enjoyment I derive from them is beyond just humour. There is real humanity and kindness here. Indeed they can be both be very moving. The lead characters are both desperately keen to help people, and neither sees himself as in any way funny.

Both series have a wonderful cast of eccentrics to support the lead. The other clerics, Colin and the black lady were all wonderful in "Rev", just as Derek's priapic mate and the handyman are in "Derek". And the girl who runs the home- I forget the actress's name- is absolutely superb, so real, so human. The way they talk to camera is just right.

Along with the gorgeous "Outnumbered" (now consigned to history as the kids grow up) and the rather charming "Hebburn" we seem to be witnessing a new golden age of Britcom.
