As a potential US ban on TikTok looms, some users of the video platform are already migrating… to other Chinese-owned lifestyle apps.

Two apps owned by Chinese companies, Xiaohungshu (which translates to "little red book" and has been called Red Note) and Lemon8, which is owned by TikTok parent company ByteDance, are topping the free app download charts in the US for iPhone and Android users. Red Note is owned by Xingyin Information Technology, a private company based in Shanghai.

As Jen Hamilton, one popular TikTok user, explained in a video, the act of downloading the Chinese apps is a form of protest against the moves to shut down TikTok in the US. "You don't want the Chinese to have our very sensitive personal data? We will drop it off directly," Hamilton said. "I do not care."

Red Note has been likened to a cross between Pinterest and Instagram, focusing on short-form lifestyle content. Lemon8, a sister app to TikTok, also has a Pinterest-like aesthetic, but is more focused on videos about lifestyle topics such as food, home and wellness.

Lawmakers have expressed concern for years that TikTok, which has 170 million users in the US, poses a national security threat interwoven with privacy risks. Last year, a newly enacted federal law required that TikTok find a US-based buyer or be shut down, with a deadline of this Sunday, Jan. 19. Lawyers representing TikTok have argued that the matter is a free speech issue. The US Supreme Court is expected within the next few days to rule on whether to uphold that law.

It's unclear how a TikTok ban, if the law is upheld, might affect access to other apps owned by Chinese companies including Red Note and Lemon8. That hasn't stopped Hamilton and other users from starting to learn Chinese and directing friends to their profiles on those TikTok alternative platforms.

They've swayed the dumb American minds. Capitalism and greed will make your own citizens sell out.

Politicians on both sides were complaining about youth support against Gazan civilians being slaughtered with images spread on TikTok. How dare they not support genocide!!!

The Democratic Party can't figure out why 20 million voters stayed home after they helped arrest and censor college students, ignored pleas from Arab and Muslim voters and human rights advocates.

Simple, because they didn’t exist, (those were millions of fake ballots).

"20 million voters stayed home"

https://ballotpedia.org/Election_results,_2024:_Analysis_of_voter_turnout_in_the_2024_general_election#Historical_voter_turnout_rates

Lowest Voter Turnout: Hawaii 50.3%

Highest Voter Turnout: Wisconsin 76.9%

Lowest Red State Turnout: Oklahoma 53.3%

Hawaii is solid blue.

Highest Blue State Turnout: Vermont 70.9%

Highest Red State Turnout Montana 68.2%

I don't know what these numbers mean, Hawaii and Vermont probably vote in very similar ways, ditto with Oklahoma and Montana...

TikTok is a privately owned company. Zhang Yiming created the site and is worth $45 billion dollars. Why should he sell it to an American? Should Musk sell X to a Chinese person?

Tiktok ban = authoritarianism

I read that Israel was upset about TikTok and asked Genocide Joe to ban it.

China is the best, just rejoice and accept its rise. Best investment by China yet was Elon and Elon has slipped into the DM's of Trump. Both love the attention and praise, not stupid Americans criticizing them every which way. A hard working and obedient society is the best workforce for the top elites and Capitalism. Siphoning all the money to the very top and having no one being able to do anything about it is glorious. $7.25 still in 26 states, it is a wonder why the US needs to offshore when slavery wages still exist here. We must thank the American people for the glory of the oligarchs.
