What did he do personally to deserve a bullet in the back of his head and what were his motives? Try and play devil's advocate and understanding his motives or is it just sheer greed and nothing else?

Thompson was accused of insider trading/fraud and was going to be investigated by the SEC.

In order to save his ass; he was going to testify against others before Congress.

Thompson was facing a DOJ investigation and a lawsuit.

I hear he liked to steal his friends fries. He'd always say he didn't want any because he was trying to lose a few lbs. Then he'd be sneaking them from the trays of his colleagues and friends. He was infamous for it.
