Phony Outrage about Boston Mayor's "Electeds of Color" Party

The [email] mistake made headlines and generated criticism from the right for the party’s exclusion of white elected officials, but Wu and others said the “Electeds of Color” party is a longstanding tradition and just one of multiple holiday celebrations thrown by the city.

“There are many, many events that are private events for all different sorts of groups, and so we’ve clarified that and look forward to seeing everyone at one of the other dozens of opportunities to celebrate the holidays together,” Wu said in video from NBC 10.

“Never let facts get in the way of some manufactured outrage,” he wrote. “Electeds of Color has existed for over a decade and the holiday party is an annual tradition. Wait until someone tells them about the Congressional Black Caucus or MA Black and Latino Legislative Caucus. The horror!!”

I don't think there is really any need for a Black Caucus. Big difference is that it is something for black politicians. The Christmas party includes everyone but white people. Why is everyone welcome but white people?

I think it's pathetic if they haven't denounced it. We know if the racially segregated holiday party included everyone but black council members everyone would denounce it. If you didn't, you'd be called a racist. That's the irony of the whole thing. These same people are the types that would talk daily about being inclusive and everyone feeling welcome. I'm still waiting to hear why they feel the need to have two holiday parties. One racially segregated and the other which is for everyone. If the taxpayers are paying for both they should be not happy when there really should be one holiday party and not an extra one that is racist and not inclusive and welcoming to all.

Emails are not a mistake. Parties require planning, and need to be signed off by the Planning Committee. Regardless if it started today or in 2013, it's racist AF and needs to be acknowledged as such.

It's not outrage, it's reality. Racism is a 2-way street.

I live in the Boston area. She's been the butt of jokes and it's definitely hurt her image. People are already a little pissed about the Mass and Cass issue, and her handling of the MBTA.

The goal of the Sheltered Market Program (SMP) is to advance equity in procurement. On December 1, 2021, Mayor Wu filed an order with the City Council that allowed Boston to designate up to six City contracts for procurement from minority- and women-owned businesses. This pilot was approved by the City Council on December 15 and was signed by the Mayor on January 11, 2022. After completion of the pilot, Mayor Wu filed an order with the City Council to authorize a full scale Sheltered Market Program in Boston.

Why does the fact that the Electeds of Color holiday party is a "longstanding tradition" make it okay? You could just as easily say back in 1861 that slavery is a "longstanding tradition" or say back in 1954 that Jim Crow is a "longstanding tradition". Being a "longstanding tradition" doesn't make the Electeds of Color holiday party okay. It just means that people have been tolerating a racist evil in Boston for a long time. The outrage isn't phony.
