"A new curriculum for African American history approved by the Florida Board of Education includes a lesson that teaches slavery had “personal benefits.”

The board unanimously approved the education program at a Wednesday meeting in Orlando after a tense, more than hourlong period of public comment, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.

The lessons angered teachers and activists, who argued they omitted key facts about the oppression of black Americans and the realities of slavery.

While the goals for public middle school teachings include the “history and evolution of slave codes,” a proposed lesson also asks instructors to show students “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

Florida had the same amount of slavery that northern states had, which was a small amount. The reason why the north states and florida did not have slaves is because they didn't have cotton and tobacco growing in them. Florida is mostly swamp so they did not have any use for slaves.

Florida is not a southern state because they do not have the southern draw accent. Florida does not have the southern draw because people of scottish descent did not live there. To be a true southern state you would have to have ethnic celtic people of scottish and british celt as the primary population.

Also Florida seceding from the union did not matter because Florida being owned by spanish people for a period of time made it so Florida did not really fit in with the other states.

Just so liberals know, southern states separating themselves from northern states is not a matter of good and evil because northern ethnic celtic people were just as psychopath as Celtic people in the southern states. Psychopath people separating themselves from other psychopath people is morally null. Psychopath northern celtic people saying that they are not psychopaths because they state out in public that they opposed slavery is stupid. Any psychopath can say the right words and do the right thing but that does not make them not a psychopath. Modern celtic people who are white liberals are psychopath just the same as the redneck celtic people they disparage.

They were brought to America where they would eventually dominate most professional sports, entertainment, and music industries. Also, they would go on to have hundreds and hundreds of social programs put into place to help them succeed at the expense of other immigrant races. Then, colleges would spend 30-40 years granting them admission sports, and scholarship programs to also assist in succeeding...also at the expense of other minority immigrant races.

Finally, and most importantly: They didn't stay in Africa.

If they were eventually freed, then yes. Also, certain skills and trades could help them on slave row. Bit of carpentry to repair where they lived. Minor medical skills and such would have benefited the slaves. Sewing to mend clothes. Certain trades and skill got them out of the fields which was a better life. I don't see the problem with mentioning that. it doesn't mean slavery was a good thing.

I didn't say generations of slaves were freed. I said the ones freed would benefit from skills and trades learned. Also, as I said, learning a skill and trade got you out of the fields. Life as a carpenter even if loaned out was better than the fields. I also pointed out how these skils and trade could benefit them in regard to their lives on slave row.

Slavery was and is an abhorrent thing. I don't think it should go unsaid that slaves were taught skills and trades, given medical treatment, housed, clothed, raised livestock, had their social time etc. You could even mention how slaves looked down on poor whites. That was touched upon in the novel Roots. Kunta Kinte drove the buggy and saw how they lived. Squalor, filthy falling down shacks, filthy clothing, diseased, no teeth, malnourished etc. Kunta as well fed and dressed sitting high up in the buggy felt superior.

1) "the curriculum doesn't say that", usually accompanied by an article showing that the curriculum says exactly that.
2) people defending the statement that slaves benefited from the skills they were taught
3) people saying that black people in America today (not the slaves being discussed) are lucky they are here and not living in trees in Africa (which apparently is how they see Africa).

the curriculum DOES NOT say that ie that "Africans benefited from slavery". It states, in one lesson, that some slaves were sometimes taught skills and that benefited them.

That is a true state and taht you want to take it and use it to support a LIE about what Florida and/or conservatives or really anyone, is saying about slavery,

The people mentioned in the except, are the group of slaves THAT WERE TRAINED IN CERTAIN SKILLS, and that, at some point, benefitted from that training.

Those are TWO very different groups.

When you claim and insist that the lesson was stating that ALL AFRICANS ENSLAVED "BENEFITED" YOU ARE MASSIVELY CHANGING THE MEANING.
