I already knew men held an advantage over women in athletics, but
The Lia Thomas issue has gotten a lot of press lately and rightly so. What he is doing is disgusting and I am glad to see so many people angered by it. CBS Sunday Morning did a piece on it today.
Total coincidence, but I was recently reminded of the vast differences betweeen men and women in this department.
Recently, I watched the Netflix documentary Untold: Deal With the Devil. It's about Christy Martin, who was a boxer in the 90s and 00s. Martin is arguably the 2nd best women's boxer behind Laila Ali. She was definitely the first superstar in the sport. She was an excellent fighter who mowed through her opponents. She was on another level compared to her competition.
She was married to this awful guy. Jim Martin, a boxing trainer. I don't know how I missed this story, but tried to kill her about a decade ago. Stabbed her multiple times and shot her.
Oh, but he had weapons you say? Years before he tried to kill her, he thought she needed a lesson in humility, so he told her to put on her gloves for a sparring session. He strapped on his gloves. Martin, being interviewed for this documentary, said she was hesitant to go full contact with him because she was a professional fighter and he is 25 years older than her. He knocked her down with one punch and she lost a tooth.
