Capitalism cannot function without the exploited poor labor class, we've outsourced most of the poor to China which is now one of the most powerful nations on the planet since China controls just about everyone's economy.
China will continue to exist without us, but without China the entire capitalistic economy will fall overnight. Having to pay full costs of labor would crush the middle class and without the middle class feeding them money the super rich will all go broke.
No one "gets ahead" in capitalism, they only get forced into a system which requires you to play or die. Once you stop playing capitalism, capitalism collapses and leaves you with nothing.
Clearly China's economic system is superior, but you have to admit they mightily abuse human rights. (I don't know if the two are linked, as conservatives will have it.)
Yet you failed to indicate how it was wrong which is because you know I am right. Capitalism requires there to be poor people that the middle class step on so the even wealthier can step on the middle. If you take the lower bricks out of a bridge, the whole structure collapses.
The End of the Megamachine brings to light the roots of the destructive forces threatening the future of humankind today. While the first part leads us to the very origins of economic, military and ideological power 5000 years ago, the second and key part retraces the formation and expansion of the modern world-system through the last 500 years. Dismantling Western progress mythologies, Scheidler shows how the logics of endless capital accumulation have devastated both human societies and ecosystems from the outset.
With the growing instability and looming collapse of the Megamachine in the 21st century new dangers as well as new possibilities for systemic change open up.
The End of the Megamachine shifts the point of view from a “history of the winners” to a “people’s history”. It highlights the key role of the “metallurgical complex” linking military and financial systems and fostering the evolution of technocratic visions of the world from antiquity to modernity. A particular focus is the history of “apocalyptic thinking” that has been formative for Western culture, both for capitalist projections of a “New World” and for anti-systemic movements.
I'm doing pretty well. And I would happily pay more for products if it meant that the workers were getting better wages and/or they were Americans. Which is one of the reasons I voted for TRump.
Glad your doing so well.. Now if only you could figure out that the party you support was dead against the minimum wage and still dead against any increase to it that would lift working men and women out of poverty.
The economic arguments against it have been openly discussed for decades. Odds that you missed it. Was that a rhetorical device?
Most of my friends are doing ok too. The ones that aren't are mostly the victims of divorce. None of them really, looking at their lives, is low cost of consumer goods what makes the difference between doing well and not.
Most of them are just happy pushing their spending to the max. If prices were higher, their second home might have been delayed a few years. Or never purchased. Cars might get smaller. Vacations might be to less far away places.
Republicans as a whole, voted for Trump, who's polices were all about increasing the wages of the working class. And it looked to be working, from teh numbers before covid.
Weren't you excited to see the rise in lower end wages?
Do you imagine it is possible that what you think happened under Trump is the real fake news, and that it did not happen at all, or that it might have happened to some virtually insignificant extent, but that Trump fixed it to look like it worked by giving so much money away in tax breaks that it effectively pushed the stock market up ... creating what is the real inflation?
Under cover of helping Americans recover from the economic crisis caused by COVID-19, Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and the GOP engineered a new, $3 trillion giveaway to monopolistic corporations and America’s billionaires, while tossing a few bones to average people.
The Fed got into the act, buying trillions in corporate bonds to artificially inflate the stock market in the months leading up to Trump’s reelection effort.6
To add insult to injury, Trump, McConnell, and the GOP launched a major effort to undo a century of consumer and worker protections by granting corporations “immunity from liability” to make it nearly impossible to sue them or otherwise hold them accountable for fraud, death, or disease.7
Trump also tried to put limits on the media, including social media, and his “enemy of the people” rhetoric led to more than half of Americans losing trust in fact-based news.8 Meanwhile, he succeeded in getting the US military (the National Guard, in this case) to attack people peacefully demonstrating in Lafayette Square in Washington, DC, so that he could have a photo op with a staffer’s Bible.
While the media focused on the photo-op part of his action, his use of the military to trample on First Amendment rights in an American city is far more alarming. Each of these steps moved America deeper into oligarchy and closer to tyranny. Now that this Pandora’s box has been opened, deep structural work is necessary to extract our government from the claws of this nation’s oligarchs.

I referenced good wage numbers "PRE COVID" because the impact of covid and the government responses to it, rendered any attempt to judge the results of economic policy too confusing to be useful.
The numbers that I heard, made sense along side of information I got from personal connections in industry, AND personal observations in my own work environment.
Increasing demand, while reducing the inflow of Third World labor, MAKES SENSE as policy to benefit American workers.
Correct. People cheering for capitalism usually don't understand these three basic things:
1. The basis for making profit in capitalism is differential advantage, which in its core is dishonest and prays on the weaknesses of others and produces a society where people fear other people and want to kill them in order to feel safe.
2. The only free people in capitalism are the rich people who don't need to work for living. All the rest are slaves, and those are the ones who produce wealth that is syphoned from them using the dishonest practices of fractional banking and put into the pockets of the rich who don't produce nothing, but just own.
3. The endgame of Capitalism is one person owning everything.
Yeah, capitalism requires different classes of people... I always find it hilarious how much we talk about increasing minimum wage here but do nothing to protect the jobs we're increasing the wages of. In fact, many of the people who support living wages also directly oppose protecting jobs that provide low skill labor.
If we honestly cared about living wages, we wouldn't be outsourcing to China. But the days when people were upset at Nike for child labor are long gone, now we won't buy their shoes unless they're made with the sweat and blood of children.
Yes, the middle class is rich, because they exploit every other country that is poor by their standards of living. Without cheap China, the middle class wouldn't be able to afford all the goods they can today.
People who are willing to put the work in “get ahead”, the people who don’t benefit from capitalism are lazy, entitled snowflakes who think the world owes them something because they’re awesome.
You didn't put in the work, you were simply born into privilege. Now you come explain to me why the girl who takes care of her family after her mother died and works a part-time job while still attending college is meant to stay down in the slums all her life while the fat boy who was simply lucky enough to be born into upper middle class gets his college education paid for by his parents and has no worries as he parties his way through college.
College is just what gets you the interview after all, with how rampant the cheating is these days and the lack of real world use for the information being provided (you learn more on the job than you do in college.) Kid with the right parents can be however the hell lazy as he wants, just has to look presentable and act mature.
Lol how do you know that? You don’t know a damn thing about me. In case you care I worked my ass off to get to where I am today. Yes life isn’t fair, some people are born into bad homelifes but capitalism gives everyone a fair chance to bring themselves up, socialism keeps everyone down except the wealthy elites and people too
Lazy to work. And quantifying peoples “privilege” is an exercise in futility, you are trying to quantify the unquantifiable, get off your pedestal, wake up at 6am, shove some coffee down your throat and go out there and work like everyone else has to, you’re nothing special you entitled snowflake
I know more about you than you do. You're the fat kid who got your life handed to you on a silver platter. You claim it is "work" just because you have to wake up at 6am. Guess what, there are people starving to death and doing more than you do every day... your life was handed to you, you're just too rich and obese to admit it.
Lol wrong on all counts, my advice to you is to not make ignorant assumptions about others when you don’t have the first clue what you are talking about.
Wrong again, the proof is in the pudding, you're in the top 1% of richest people in the world. To be completely average you'd need to be making less than 2850 USD a year
Lol your cite was comparing income to the global scale, the fact that America, a capitalist country has a considerably higher income that the global average should tell you something. Lol you are such a pathetic liar
"Wrong again, the proof is in the pudding, you're in the top 1% of richest people in the world. To be completely average you'd need to be making less than 2850 USD a year"
LEARN TO READ, I said you were in the top 1% of richest people in the world and I proved that. Simply because you're not smart enough to know what a strawman argument is or argue on an intellectual level doesn't change that I proved my claim.
Then that proves my point you idiot, clearly we have a great economic system that has allowed the average US income to be 12 times higher than the global average. Maybe if you weren’t a deluded libtard you’d realize this.
My point was that you don't get to be that rich without exploiting the nations that are 1/12th the wealth of your nation... and that you're too filthy rich to give a crap about people who are poorer than you. Clearly the middle class is a plague on this planet.
Please prove that it’s impossible to get rich without “exploiting the nations that are 1/12th the wealth of your nation”, as of now all you’ve done is prove my point. Capitalism works, your own source confirms it.
Why bother, rich people like yourself refuse to acknowledge how rich you are... and that was what we started this whole discussion about. That you're too rich to give a crap about people who have 1/12th the wealth of your nation.
I do give a crap about them, far more than you do and they should adopt a system like we have so they can be rich as well. Your own source confirms this. That’s the difference between capitalists and socialists. Capitalists want to make the poor wealthier, socialists want to make the wealthy poorer.
Also I never claimed I was anything special, just that I put the work in like everyone else has to. I guess we can add strawmans to your list of logical fallacies
Yet another ignoramus who doesn't know what a strawman argument is, and just throws out the names of fallacies because he's too stupid to put the work in to educate himself.
A strawman is when you misrepresent someone’s side and create a new argument because you can’t argue the current argument. You asserted that I asserted I was virtuous and special because I worked which I never even implied. I get the feeling you’re just trolling, kid. Go find a more productive hobby, heck if you were working right now you wouldn’t need socialism.
A strawman is when you inform A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSON that someone is supporting a distorted version of their own argument. The whole point is that since that person isn't there to defend their actual argument the blows you trade against the strawman appear to defeat that person's argument in the eyes of A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSON.
You simply cannot have a strawman argument between two people who are actively arguing because it doesn't work that way.
(Besides, you actually never explained what you were claiming was a strawman, you only claimed I strawmanned you and left it as a "self-evident truth"
"Also I never claimed I was anything special, just that I put the work in like everyone else has to. I guess we can add strawmans to your list of logical fallacies."
Here, the question should be where did I say you were special; in fact the post you're responding to clearly claimed "You claim it is "work" just because you have to wake up at 6am. Guess what, there are people starving to death and doing more than you do every day." Which is pointing out that there are people who aren't as rich as you (something you keep denying despite being a proven fact) and that have to do more work than you do just to survive.
I explained quite clearly how you stramanned me, you intentionally distorted my position because you couldn’t argue the facts so you created an entirely different argument. Typical libtard tactic.
Appeal to self evident truth is also a fallacy, all I need to do is say "it isn't apparent to me" and then the burden of proof is on you to make it apparent. As I clearly indicated "it isn't apparent to me"
In fact, I countered what you considered a strawman with a definition that doesn't match yours which would mean even if your reasoning were self-evident the fact is that our definitions for strawman differ and we're back at you having to defend your position.
You don’t have the first clue what you’re talking about and yes you did straw man me, and the fact that it’s “not apparent to you” is only demonstrated your own lack of intelligence.
Entitled brats who want everything handed to them and are too stupid to realize that socialism and communism screws everyone over except the wealthy elites
^ This guy had EVERYTHING handed to him and never had a problem in his life... but because capitalism screws everyone over and turns them into slaves he is bitter about his slavery and claims it is "work" to be obese and wake up at 6am. Give me a break, try living in the shoes of someone less privileged and someone who has to actually work each and every day just to afford enough food to survive.
Someone who didn't have their life handed to them all packaged up and ready to go. This entitled brat wouldn't last 5 min in someone else's shoes, and he'd scream about how unfair it was that his privilege got taken away from him because like being born into wealth is all he has.
Please explain to me how you know that? So far every assumption you’ve made about me is wrong. You seem like an angry person , maybe you should see a therapist
