Police can't shoot people trying to kill them anymore

Police were called for a domestic disturbance. Walter Wallace Jr., the man behind the domestic disturbance, was chasing police with a knife. Shot dead as a result. https://twitter.com/AttorneyCrump/status/1320918523070337026

There were riots, of course. https://twitter.com/BobKellyFOX29/status/1321053216633769985/photo/1

Kinda funny the first picture in this slideshow is of a protester with his hands up and back to the police when you consider Wallace was walking TOWARDS the cops armed WITH A KNIFE: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/10/26/walter-wallace-philadelphia-police-fatally-shoot-black-man/6050621002/.

This man was no George Floyd, Walter Scott, or Eric Garner. It's a shame because he is rumored to have been mentally ill, so this is truly sad. But what are cops supposed to do? He was actively trying to kill them.

This issue is never going away unless conservatives can admit there are unjustified killings and liberals stop saying all these people are innocent victims.

these stories of how they are going to defund police take away your guns make you walk into a cattle car and gas you are all just made up to scare the poor peasant

reply

The issue is police should not have been there. His mother called for an ambulance, not the cops. But I wish cops had the tact of Paul Newman in Fort Apache. Usually they show up, shoot, and then afterwards figure out what's going on. The other aspect of this is Wallace had "mental issues"; we should know what Big Pharma drugs he was on or off that caused this, but they always leave that out of the equation. I.e. coercive psychiatry I can guarantee was behind his actions/reactions.
But the 3 names you list are part of a list that numbers in the thousands: they all don't get attention because not all have viral videos. We need social workers, community safety officers, and other unarmed personnel 99% of the time. Only for rare violent situations do we actually need armed officers. But the real answer is training and selecting smart and ethical people to be on the force, AND holding those who break the law accountable...even if they're cops!

reply

What the fuck are EMTs going to do against a guy running around with a knife? Send a social worker, EMT, whatever, and if the guy is armed they're gonna send cops to escort them.

reply

Adam, for once put yourself in an officer’s shoes. What would you do? EMT’s, social workers, etc. are not trained to deal with a raving maniac welding a knife or a machete. Like you I played Monday morning quarterback until someone called me on it. Would you be willing to step between an officer and a wild person brandishing a knife? I doubt it! The officers didn’t know he was mental. Most of your posts are “They should have done this or done that!” I’m guilty of doing it also at times until someone points out the fallacies of my statements. I then say “Mea culpa”.

reply

Yes, EMTs and social workers are probably BETTER trained to deal with raving maniacs. All cops know is to shoot 'em.

reply

"Would you be willing to step between an officer and a wild person brandishing a knife?" Actually his mother did exactly that, but he broke free of her and instead of tasing him or many other options, the cops used their one button machines because that's the easiest solution and they know they won't be held accountable.

reply

Hey look, all the armchair cops think they can handle pressure cooker situations with split second decision making.

I bet all of you would be pulling the trigger faster than the cops you demonize.

reply

Just do what lets you go home after the shift is over. If you get fired as long as you write the amount of tickets the city wants you to write you can get another job at any town.

reply

You are just cherry picking the incidents that could be considered ambiguous.

Someone mentioned shooting threatening people in the knee, but police will never be trained to try to shoot people in the knee or leg, that's ridiculous.

That is why they have Tasers. They do their best and if they cannot stop someone I don't think we should ever expect police to risk their lives like this. We had a shooting like this in our town a few years ago. Police were called on a mentally ill man who was reported to be running around with a kitchen bread knife. The police ended up shooting him dead, and no one liked this outcome, but they ruled it legal.

These shootings are a problem, and some of them are wrongful deaths ... that's pretty much it. Over time maybe technology will come up with better means to subdue people, but until then we should look at each of these incidents as individual events, all different.

reply

" we should look at each of these incidents as individual events, all different."

That's exactly what I did. Cherry picking? I took the Wallace incident and formed an opinion based on evidence. Shooting justified. I named THREE incidents that weren't. Cherry picking?! Get the fuck out of here.

Not all Philly cops have tasers. Lack of $$$.

Why don't they shot them in the leg? Besides the FACT it's a much smaller target, THIS is why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STspPota7es. Shot multiple times in the torso and kept coming.
