The producers, the actors, the writers, the studio, the editors--nobody, at any point during the making of Spectre stopped and said, "Hey, making Bond and Blofeld brothers might be really, really stupid."

I swear, half the budget must go to cocaine or something.

It seems to have been Sam Mendes' idea. But was clearly okayed by everyone due to his success with SF. Maybe they were all feeling smug so didn't stop to think.

Plus all other franchises have to have the 'personal' connection to baddies nowadays.
