Goldeneye Overrated????

I just saw another run of Goldeneye, while I do like the film. I do not view it as greatly as some in here, who place within their top 5 Bond films. Nor do I believe it is a masterpiece of a film.

While it does have an interesting villain and his interesting henchwoman. I have a wee bit of a problem with the plot. The plot again is a throwback to the cartoonish plots of the Moore films, with comedy mixed throughout the whole film.

I believe that most Bond fans may overplay their excitement for this film in the light of Brosnan's successive two films (TND & TWINE), which are largely forgettable and the last one, the infantile DAD.

Any agreements?????

It's "revved up like a deuce another runner in the night"

Nope. I think GE is great and nobody can take that away from me!

Now, this is a signature gun, and that is an optical palm reader.

I think the consensus opinion is that it was overpraised on its initial release in 95, so I wouldn't really say that it's overrated anymore.

It has a few great strengths- Xenia, Bean (who isn't in the movie nearly as much as it seems like in memory, which is unfortunate) and great action from Martin Campbell. But otherwise it's just a super generic Bond film without an awful lot to distinguish it.

reply

Sure, it's overrated. Doesn't mean it's not a great Bond, and doesn't mean that - when the next Bond inevitably rolls around and we immediately get people declaring 'BEST BOND EVER' - we will immediately see the same reevaluation of Craig's films and specifically the massively praised Casino Royale being picked apart. I specifically expect that groanworthy 'armour' dialogue from CR to become the new 'it's what keeps me aliiiiiive'.

Based on what poll? Never heard anyone say that

A James Bond fan complaining about a static camera?

That's just a false narrative. Martin Campbell also directed two movies in the Zorro franchise. Mask of Zorro, like Goldeneye, was fantastic, and very polished. Legend of Zorro, like Casino Royale, was more of a marketing cash in. The narrative is discombobulated and so is the tone. Weak, undeveloped characters. Orci and Kurtzman are the American Purvis and Wade. Only they could mess up original source material like that.

It's kind of good, kind of not. I find the plot in Goldeneye to be lacking, but I like the villains and the girls, and the action. I especially love Xenia Onatopp, who is the best henchwoman of the whole series, so it gets points for that.

Goldeneye gets points for having good villains, a good Bond girl, and the best henchwoman of the entire series. But the plot is kind of simple, but the characters and action make up for it.
