Has Bond's promiscuity lost it's edge in our modern age?

Basically Bond being a... I guess you could say manwhore (not that I am judging), seems to have lost it's edge. It was more effective back in the 60s but ever since the free love movement, it's kind of a generic character trait nowadays compared to before.

Unless I am wrong?

Verily I say unto thee...the films now are trying to capture audience members that no one would have given a damn about in those glorious pre PC days when Bond first made his impact on the world. It is a given that Bond is a man who appreciates beautiful women but God forbid that this essential trait of the character is given too much prominence in these restricted days.

That's nonsense, and you're saying exactly the opposite of what the OP thinks. He says that "promiscuity" has gotten so normal since the early days that nobody really cares about Bond's exploits any more, while you (of course) dig out your perennial prayer wheel to continually whine about PC.

In the newer movies, Bond beds just as many ladies as in those good old days. And it is not exactly PC if he, say, sneaks up on a former child prostitute as in SKYFALL, which quite a few people themselves unsuspicious of being PC found questionable. But other than that, RynoII is right that it's just not really worth mentioning any longer.

I don't see why people have a problem with that Skyfall scene, since the woman responded so positively to Bond.

Also, in Spectre, Bond seduces a woman right after her husband dies, and no one complained about that.

reply

I, for one, do not have problems with those scenes myself. Just mentioning that for quite a few people, they certainly do not represent cases of being overly "PC" in showing Bond's sexual exploits.

He does kind of hit or miss at times, with Solange and Camille. But he is out saving the world. And sometimes its water supply.

If anything, this Bond highlights he's NOT PC in our PC world. Confusing to some, he does it his way.

So I don't think the promiscuity aspect has lost its edge, the examples here all played very well for OO7.

Bond as a romantic hero is part of the character's archetype and should not be removed.

reply

Yeah, that's much more important. Bond does fall for the latest Bond Girl he's presented with and they respond. That should never change.

Verily I say unto thee...for once you are correct and this aspect of Bond should NEVER change.I know we run the risk of upsetting the zealots of the poison known as Political Correctness but so what? Bond must never be allowed to be transformed into a scion of the neighbouring city of Gomorrah.
