I guess at some point I may have to seek out the 3-disc set. I'm a commentary completist and Marty Campbell really knows his stuff when it comes to Bond. In the meantime I'll be very excited to hear the crew commentary that's included. I heard the very beginning of it yesterday where Phil Meheux talks about the B&W opening and how it was inspired by the classic spy thrillers like THE THIRD MAN and THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD. And how the widescreen that is used in that scene between Bond and Dryden was inspired by the widescreen in THE IPCRESS FILE.
It's still unforgivable that we don't have a commentary for QOS and SP though. Heck, I even have Irvin Kershner's commentary for NSNA, where he mostly did a play-by-play (e.g. here Bond gets suspicious, and here he spots the lady and knows that she's up to no good, and here he jumps off the cliff on his horse). He does mention that he regrets how flat the cinematography looks (especially in the cave scenes) but mostly he's just explaining what's on the screen. Still, at least there WAS a commentary. A Bond film MUST have a commentary! Even if it involves bottled water or Bond's brother. Besides, Mendes is fascinating to listen to.
Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!
