Octopussy: Yay or nay?

I watched it again, and everytime I see this movie over the years, it's always been a mixed bag for me. I love Orlov's nuclear bomb/jewel smuggling plot.

He is a better character than the others, but sadly he doesn't get as much screen time. Kahn gets more which I find puzzling since I don't think he is as good of a villain and comes off as more of a stock villain perhaps.

Octopussy is not a bad Bond girl, but Magda could have been better. Her seduction of Bond was completely by the numbers I guess you could say, and was just there for the sake of it maybe, but she is hot though.

Some of the humor really works, such as the women invading the fortress, and the tarzan yell. I actually do not mind the clown and gorilla suit, but they do a really poor job of explaining how Bond got in and out of both costumes so unbelievably quickly. I think it would have been much better if during the bomb countdown, he was actually putting on the clown costume as fast as he could, and they made that part of the countdown/race against time, rather than having him have a full clown suit on with perfect make up, in just a few seconds.

Some of the other humor though is really lame. There is the backgammon sequence in which Bond uses the villains cheating against him, and Gobinda crushes the dice with his hand. This is just a rip off, of Goldfinger. Not even a good homage... It literally feels like a lazy copying of it.

And the tennis humor with Vijay Amritraj was very lame too, and I can't help but be taken out of the movie every time I see it.

The action sequences and set pieces are all top notch though, if not close to. It is very impressive on the action scale, but could use some better characters perhaps, and cut down on some of the bad humor.

I think Q might have his best moment in the series though... "we haven't time for that. Later perhaps." So again, it's a mixed bag.

What do you think?

Verily I say unto thee...a firm yay from me despite the clown sequence. I'd rather see Bond dressed as clown than see a Bond movie directed by one (QoS)

OCTOPUSSY is excellent.

Haha! Great words!

Yes! A Yay from also. We should appreciate all the good stuff in OP, and forget (if we want) the happy escapades with tennisrackets (well, he met his match!) and any other stuff that may irritate. Its probably the ultimate happy bond matinee, with still some gruesome sequences in it.

Definite nay. Silliest, most illogical and cringe-inducing Bond movie of the franchise when it came out, and the worst of the Moore films until then, and I keep moving towards preferring even AVTAK, which will happen in the not so distant future, I assume. Then of course, TWINE and DAD came along later to show that OP and AVTAK were not really that bad. Still, deeply inferior and in my bottom six.

The correct spelling is "YUUUUUUGE" nowadays.

YUUUUUGE is the proper spelling. It always has been. It's the best spelling, believe me.
