What made GoldenEye so acclaimed?
I'm a huge fan of that film.
For those who liked it, what exactly made it such a successful stand out Bond film?
For those who didn't like it, what are things about it you didn't like?

Because it is a very good film.
I think Goldeneye showed the perfect way to do a modern(I know its getting on now) Bond film. It had a nice atmosphere about it too.
Another thing, it managed to give Bond a personal issue with the villain, in a way that felt very fresh. Post Spectre, that seems impossible, but it workes because they used it as an extra facet to the film, as opposed to dominating the story as the more recent ones have.
Lastly, it has a strong Bond debut, a superb villain, great opening, great final battle with the villian. A superb henchwoman(the odd semi sex fight they have was a great scene) plus, Bond takes on the Russian army in a Tank!
Whats not to like?
Pretty much this in a nutshell. The only thing that's not everyone's liking is Eric Serra's techno musical score. And I'm not sure what's everyone's opinion on the title song. It's relatively good, but not one of the all-time greats at least to me.
What we do in life, echoes in eternity.
Because it was good and had a lot of what people loved about Bond films.
shareIt worked as a Bond film with all the things you expect but made for the 90's.
"You'll have to speak up I'm wearing a towel"
It was the first Bond movie after eight years, and they probably could as well have re-released ISHTAR as a Bond film, newly dubbed and re-named, and the people would still have been happy about it. (Disclaimer: I once watched ISHTAR and really didn't think it was the disaster it came to be known as. Certainly better than...no, strike that.)
It was the first post-cold war Bond film, and everyone thought it was a new era, although the actual confrontation between East and West had never played a major role before, with the really bad guys always being renegades, just like Ourumov, as compared to Klebb, Orlov, Koskov and possibly a few others.
It was the first Bond film at least partially shot in Russia.
IMO, it was quite well made, but has its shortcomings. But I liked it, and you only asked the people who didn't like it to tell you those.

Childhood nostalgia is a major factor in its undesevered popularity.

I don't get it. What is it you're referring to? A computer game, or what? I think there's a whole generation (MINE!) that never played any computer games and certainly won't mingle their love (or hate) for movies with those, even if the game is somehow based on those movies.
Besides, I appreciate GOLDENEYE but certainly not because of childhood nostalgia. I was about 40 when I first saw it.

It's the classic 1997 Nintendo 64 video game GOLDENEYE 007, based on the movie and one of the most influential games of all time, a game that many from my generation spent countless sleepless nights playing and a major reason why GoldenEye the movie is remembered as fondly as it is from a popular culture perspective (not that it isn't good in its own right, but both Dalton films are good too and nobody from the general public really cares about them).
