bad treatment of Quarrel / Waste of the character

Quarrel started as a threatening and strong character. He was mysterious, he could fight and made a strong impression on Bond.

He was a strong ally with a lot of knowledges.

Then, as soon as they arrive on Crab Key, the character is treated like a supertitious dumb, afraid of everything, acting like he never saw a beautiful woman (his look at Honey).

The worst part is when Bond ask him to go and "fetch my shoes".

I know it was 1962 and people were still ignorant about racist matters, so I'm not saying it's a "racist movie" and I adore this film, but it is still uncomfortable to watch.

The character comes off a bit better in the novels.

For one, he features in two adventures, Live and Let Die and then Doctor No.

IIRC, in LALD Quarrel helps train 007 for a lengthy scuba mission. A few years later, Bond hooks up with him up again in DN for assistance.

He's depicted as much more of a friend of Bond's than he is in the movie.

Verily I say unto thee...so what you are basically saying is that he started out as a major Quarrel and ended up as a minor Tiff.
