Bond PTS Tournament Round 1: You Only Live Twice v The Man With The Golden Gun

So OHMSS is through and LTK is gone.

On to the next matchup.

You Only Live Twice vs The Man With The Golden Gun.

Neither have a big action piece as such.
YOLT does benefit from a nice mysterious space scene, underpinned by the beautiful Space March, by John Barry.
We know, of course, that Bond's supposed death is a red herring, but it is interesting none the less.

TMWTGG follows on from LALD in not featuring Bond at all, unless you count a waxwork.
It does get over the skills if Scaramanga nicely, but the distinct lack of Bond and no noticeable action makes this a weaker entry

My pick:You Only Live Twice

reply

Well, without much enthusiasm, it's YOLT for me.

YOLT, without a doubt.
"Capsule in space" by John Barry is a masterpiece.

reply

YOLT.

I can't in good conscience vote for a Roger Moore film.

Right. In these uncertain times, we need men with principles, don't we?

No, just men who are convincing as James Bond.

I loved him as the Saint and especially as Lord Brett Sinclair, but once I started reading the novels, I couldn't accept him as 007 anymore.

No contest...though I don't put his Bond movies at the bottom just because he is my second-least favourite actor to play Bond, and has been even before I started reading most of the novels.

Anyway, if OHMSS is quite comfortable "up there" in spite of Lazenby's obvious lack of Thespian virtues, I don't have a problem with giving the edge to one of Rog's movies here or there.

Plus: I really like Rog. As I keep saying, he's the Bond I would probably want to have a beer with the most of them all. But I might also aim to concentrate the conversation on Lord Brett Sinclari.

I don't put his 007 films at the bottom just because he isn't my favourite 007 either. I put them there because of their campness. I simply prefer the grittier interpretations that other actors have brought to the role.

As a film, OHMSS is a fantastic novel. There are many things to like about it, but George Lazenby and Telly Savalas aren't two of them. And I like Telly Savalas very much as KOJAK.

I really like Roger Moore too. Just not as James Bond.

It's just a shame that it's too late to do a film about THE PERSUADERS.
