Ranking of James Bond Directors

I start it up:

1) Terence Young (Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Thunderball): he directed the 3 of the 4 best Bond movies.
2) Peter Hunt (On Her Majesty's Secret Service): fantastic script and some very well directed scenes.
3) Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun): Goldfinger could well be his least interesting effort but DAF and first two Roger Moore establish him as a master of camp tone.
4) Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale): his direction in Goldeneye is bland and the strong Casino Royale could have been better with a more talented director.
5) John Glen (For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill): FYEO is a nice script ruined by a so-so direction; OP and AVTAK are worse than FYEO but his direction is quite improved to become very good in Dalton's movies.
6) Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace): his unique Bond effort is not bad with some very well directed scenes: Bond drunk on the airplane, the opening and the final scene.
7) Sam Mendes (Skyfall, Spectre): theorically, 007 most celeb director; practically not a 007 good director
8) Roger Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies): TND is fast, very fast but Spottiswoode's direction is quite a mess
9) Lewis Gilbert (You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker): You Only Live Twice is a mess of a movie, The Spy Who Loved Me is nothing more than the remake of YOLT.
10) Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day): Lee who?
11) Michael Apted (The World is not Enough): what a bore of direction

Oh well, do not judge neither the single director career nor the single 007 movie greatness but i'm asking to value the director's contribution to the 007 saga from a direction point of view.
A movie you hate for some aspects (script or acting, for instance) could well be saved for being well directed.

reply

1) Lewis Gilbert (YOLT is a magnificent movie and the greatest Bond film of them all, TSWLM is indeed a remake and all the better for it and MR is at the very least a fun watch)

2) Terence Young (note the correct spelling of his first name) DN, FRWL and TB are all wonderful movies that established Bond as the cinematic icon that he remains.

3) Roger Spottiswoode who perhaps by accident directed the best Bond film since YOLT.

4) Peter Hunt, editing the previous Bonds made him a masterful director with OHMSS and boy did he deliver.

5) Guy Hamilton, this journeyman director knocked it out of the park with the classic GF and to a lesser extent LALD. DAF and TMWTGG disappointed though.

6) John Glen, not a great director by any means but did the job by delivering five acceptable entries in the franchise.

7) Lee Tamahori because the pure amount of action in DAD justifies it.

8) Martin Campbell, excellent handling of CR but GE was dated when it was released and even more so now.

9) Sam Mendes...excelled with SF, considerably less so with SP.

10) Michael Apted, a very good director but not suited to Bond which the dull TWINE more than made evident.

11) Marc Forster, nothing he had done prior to Bond justified his entitlement to direct an action movie and this was proved as QoS turned out to be an embarrassment to the very art of cinema itself.

reply

I'm rewatching the entire saga and YOLT pale in comparison with the first 4 entries.
There are some fun moments and Pleasance is mybe the best Blofeld. point.
All the rest is forgettable: Connery was tired, the final battle is repetitive and Japanese Bond is the worst idea ever conceived in this franchise.
Why do u rank it so high?

reply

I rate it so high because I am an action buff and this is not just my favourite Bond film but my very favourite movie of all time. The film remains a wonder to behold and the final battle scene one of the most thrilling ever filmed and in the greatest set ever created for a movie. A great title song and opening credits, marvellous John Barry score, Freddie Young photography and a script by Roald Dahl all combine to put this ahead of the flock by a considerable margin.I genuinely pity those who are unable to respond to this wondrous film in the same fashion that I do and it is not for me to speculate on the perhaps sensitive reasons why they might not.

reply

turned out to be an embarrassment to the very art of cinema itself.

That's muted compared to your usual criticism of the movie.

reply

Sorry, your ranking is not accurate.

Now, this is a signature gun, and that is an optical palm reader.

reply

Verily I say unto thee...I'd love to hear you say that with a Chinese accent.

reply

I did, while typing it.
