Up until the 2010's happened, were the Late 1990's/Early 2000's the worst time ever for mainstream music?

I think they were. I mean that was the era of teen pop singers, boy bands, cheesy rap music, post-grunge and nu-metal. It was the era when the whole era when everybody was trying so hard to be a bad boy or bad girl and failing so hard at it and looking back at this period is so cringeworthy these days and the more I learn more about this awful period, the more I hate it.

Thank god the Mid-to-Late 2000's saved us for awhile from this terrible period. Sure the 2000's weren't perfect, but they were much better than the cultural wasteland that is the Late 1990's/Early 2000's. And I think this awful period for pop culture deserves all the blame for how terrible things are today.

See the genres you posted. That's what's missing, VARIETY!!!! No matter what was popular at the time, you always had other artist or genres poppin as well. Music was fine until 2008 and then it all went to hell. We have too many one hit wonders & gimmicks over staying their welcome. By the time I graduate HS, my taste in music started changing anyway. I got into smooth Jazz, lounge, house & chill. I started getting into K-pop around 2009 and then J-rock and never looked back. I pretty much stick to 80s, 90s & early 2000s.

No, social media ruined music, as well as pirating and the music biz trotting in some bratty new teeny-bopper who might or might not be able to sing every 6 years. Frankly, pop stars actually have it worse these days because the public gets bored so fast that they can't always keep up; whereas, pop stars of the Millennium Era enjoyed a longer career, partially due to slower communication, and the fact that they kept up their gigs instead of trying to coast on one or two albums and hope they don't have to work again.

you want no originality, look at pop music today, compared to the turn of the century.
