The Lodger (1944) or The Man in the Attic (1953)?

The Lodger - Just saw this terrific, atmospheric, London set thriller for the first time. It's set at the time of the Jack the Ripper murders.

George Sanders (in a rare heroic role)is the Scotland Yard Detective on the trail of Jack the Ripper. Laird Cregar is the mysterious lodger, who may or may not be the killer everyone is on the lookout for.

An unrecognisable Cedric Hardwicke as the man who rents the room Cregar's character moves into. Sara Allgood as his wife, who becomes suspicious of her new guest. Merle Oberon as the stage star who is their niece.

I love this one very much, but I think Cregar plays the lodger as too suspicious, there should be more doubt as to the sort of man he is.

I like Man in the Attic(1953)starring Jack Palance. That is the same story, but in that version there is more doubt as to the lodgers identity. The Lodger captures the fear and hysteria sweeping the city better though I thought.

Which do you prefer? Overall I prefer The Lodger.

The Lodger, just something about Laird's portrayal that grips one.
Palance was of course very good, but for me hand's down is The Lodger.

The Lodger. Laird Cregar is creepier (and maybe a slightly better actor) than even Jack Palance, and evokes some sympathy as well as fear.

The 1944 film is also better than Hitchcock's 1926 silent.

The Lodger is the best. It's a classic thriller. The acting, set design, directing, script were all outstanding.
Any vintage film shot in England, I usually feel is great.
