Hello everyone! And welcome to the 7th IMDb Critics Circle Top 100!
As you may know Sergeant_Tibbs ran the poll in 2014 and 2015 and oversaw retrospective Top 100’s from 2010 – 2013, ran by various buzzers. (Full results here: 2015: http://boxd.it/C8Vc | 2014: http://boxd.it/mdFw | 2013: http://boxd.it/EgSk | 2012: http://boxd.it/GbWK | 2011: http://boxd.it/Hx8E | 2010: http://boxd.it/Jm3s)
This year I’ll be leading the poll with the blessing of Tibbs, because he’s a busy man!
Now for everybody’s favourite part… the rules!
General Poll Rules: (please try to read )
➡ Please post in this thread or PM me directly a ranked list of up to 20 films (features, documentaries and shorts) by Tuesday 21st February 12.00 midnight PST (8AM next day GMT, 3AM next day EST). It must be ranked and, for my sake, please number your list too. Your #1 will be worth 20 points, your #2 will be worth 19 points, #3 18pts, and so on. You can send me a list with less than 20 films on it if you wish, but your #1 will be worth the amount of points of the total films on your list. For example, if you send me a top 10, your #1 will be worth only 10 points. Also, please list them with English translated titles. There is no need to label them with the directors. Please make sure there are no accidental repeated titles.
➡ If you submit your list early then you are free to update your list at anytime until the deadline but please describe exactly what changes you made because I won't remember your old list. Tell me what's new, tell me what's bumped down and tell me what's out. Or, just wait till nearer the deadline!
➡ Eligibility requirements: This poll doesn’t revolve around U.S. release dates. So, films such as Kimi no na wa. (2016) (Your Name), Forushande (2016) (The Salesman) and A United Kingdom (2016) which got national releases in some places in 2016 but won’t get a U.S. release until 2017 are eligible here.
➡Films like Split (2016) are technically eligible as they had 2016 festival runs, however I would ask that you only vote for them if you saw them at a festival in 2016, otherwise save them for next year.
Similarly films that hit 2015 festivals but were released (inter)nationally in 2016 are eligible, examples of this include: The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015), Green Room (2015) and High-Rise (2015).
➡ Films that did have some international releases in 2015 but had their U.S. and other national releases in 2016 will be accepted. For example; El abrazo de la serpiente (2015) (Embrace of the Serpent), The Lobster (2015) and Il racconto dei racconti - Tale of Tales (2015). Please see the main thread for a fuller list of films IMDb lists as 2015 but will be accepted.
➡ Taking into account all of the above, I will not accept votes for American films with U.S. releases in 2015 that had some international releases in 2016 such as The Revenant and Spotlight. These are widely considered to be 2016 films and if you vote for these I'll ask you to change your ballots.
➡ Short films are eligible here, once again, on the condition that they had a notable film festival screening (or indeed a full release). Any film attached to a Disney film, for example, is also eligible. Some possibilities include; Borrowed Time (2015) and Piper (2016).
➡ TV movies are eligible. So if you wish to vote for The Dresser (2015), or All the Way (2016) then you can. This also includes feature documentaries that had its main distribution on TV or Internet (Netflix) such as 13th (2016) and Team Foxcatcher (2016). However, no TV series or TV miniseries are allowed. Neither are music videos or visual albums meaning Lemonade is not eligible.
➡ The exception here is O.J.: Made in America (2016) which is eligible due to the fact it received a theatrical release.
➡ While these rules may affect your ballots, I do ask that you vote honestly rather than strategically. Include and exclude what you have to depending on these eligibility rules but please rank honestly. Your first priority should be ensuring your true favourites get the points they need (feel free to FYC the hell out of them)!
TOO LONG; DIDN’T READ VERSION:
1. Send me up to a top 20 films of 2016 by Tuesday 21st February.
2. Feel free to update your ballot throughout voting.
3. The eligibility rules should be quite accommodating, if not straightforward, so for the most part feel free to include what you like – you will be notified if there are any issues. Remember some films that made our 2015 Top 100 are eligible, you can vote for these.
4. This includes some films listed as 2015 on IMDb, you can vote for these even if you had them in your 2015 ballot.
5. But not films that are commonly considered 2015.
6. Short films are eligible, providing they had a festival or full/limited release. Not just internet.
7. TV Movies are eligible, including films and documentaries that were released through Television and on Internet (Netflix).
8. TV Minseries and regular TV Shows are not eligible. Nor are music videos and visual albums.
9. Except O.J. Made in America which is eligible due to having a theatrical release.
10. While the rules may change your list, please vote honestly with your rankings.
Hopefully that all makes sense, just ask if you have any questions!
I may continue the tradition of trying to gather reviews for the top 20 (or so) films for the end presentation so if you have an idea of what you'd like to review (ideally claim what you have already written, this will make it easier) then feel free to mention it now, but there will also be a separate thread on this closer to the time if it goes ahead. As always there’s no way to guarantee what makes the cut but we all know what the main contenders and board faves are.
Voting will open straight away, however I won’t start counting just yet and if you plan on watching more then feel free to hold off on sending your ballot for now!
If you do vote early and decide to make changes, even if you vote in thread, it is still important you notify me of any changes you make. If you’d like a reminder for later just ask! Time permitting I will try to chase ballots up anyway.
All ballots are welcome, but I also encourage as many FYC’s as possible!
Keep an eye on this thread for more details of eligibility as well as any questions and FYC’s that others post.
Thanks everyone, I hope to see your ballot soon!
