Two Tv Shows I Cannot Remember the Name of (Solved)

I saw these back in the 90's when I was younger and cannot remember the name of them so forgive me for patchy details. The first one I recall being about a little boy (I remember he was a fairly familiar child actor at the time but do not know his name.) who was guided by his dead older sister. She apparently was mentally ill and their father killed her out of anger for some reason. He was then going to kill his son, but he was caught by the police in time. The show now revolved around him going through life alone, with the help of his sister's spirit that was sent by heaven to guide him on the path of good and she offers advice. I remember the show had an antagonist who was this older almost cowboy looking guy who was supposed to be aligned with the devil or something and would tempt the boy to do bad things. (It is not Touched by an Angel!)

The second show was about a women who developed an advanced VR system and it would simulate a virtual world when she used it with others (The CGI was actually pretty neat for the time). When she used it alone however, she would enter into these different real world scenes and she had to resolve the mystery of the events and could feel pain and die in the world. She could only escape by finding a object significant to the event that glowed green or something along those lines.

Any help identifying these would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure about the first one but I think the second is VR.5. Hope this helps!

Anyone know the first one?

Well, it hit me last night. I remember it now because I was thinking about the cowboy looking bad guy. Gary Cole one of my favorite actors was the sheriff in “American Gothic” back in the 90s. That’s the show you were looking for I think! The 1995 series not the 2016 series.
